This program was closed in 2006 due to lack of funding. Over the last 15 years hundreds of wild animals have found comfort here. About half were successfully rehabed and returned to the wild. The other 1/2 found an end to their pain and suffering. As most of the animals brought in were either injured by something much bigger then themselves or were very young and had spent too many hours or even days without a Mom to take care of them, we are very proud of our accomplishments here at Oak-Tree Sanctuary!

All Oak-Tree Sales Benefit Nature Sanctuary & Wildlife Rehabilitation Programs!

Did you know that as of July of 2000, we are the only active federally & state licensed wildlife rehabilitator in Steuben County?

We work closely with the N.Y.S.D.E.C., Police & Health Department. Even though the state & federal governments license wildlife rehabilitators, there is NO funding provided!

We need to purchase: feed, fencing, lumber, medical supplies, gasoline (used to transport animals & donations), cleaning supplies, office stuff  & more!

Special needs: copier, computer, tractor, gravel & stone, plastic barrels, body work for a donated 1989 Chevy van ( rust spots, but worth saving!) or a newer van, lumber & fencing for a 100'x100' soft release fawn pen with a shed & many other cages & pens to house the wild ones. Hay & Grain for winter feed. Straw, shavings & shredded paper for bedding!

You get the picture...non-profit does not mean no cash needed!!!

Mute Swan-Released

These 2 lost their home to loggers this spring, "2001" The 60+  foot oak came crashing down, nest and babies with it!
They must have had an angel looking out for them, as they and the nest, are in perfect condition! As cream colored fluff balls, we can not identify them! Now that most of there feathers are in, we have a couple of ideas but are still not sure! Will post true identity when they have matured! Both are doing well, one is a little on the slow side though.  Any guesses???

Last call of 2000!
This little Kestrel Hawk was found frozen to the wall of a steel building owned by the Bath, N.Y. transfer station. He is doing well and waiting on spring!

SORRY FOR THE GRAPHIC PICTURE
Being a wildlife rehabilitator has it's down side!

Fawn killed by 3 dogs at Canacadea Park in Hornell,
June 29th, mid-day, while "taking a walk" with their owner! He drives a black pick-up & was seen washing the blood off his dogs!

These 4 fawns arrived in the Spring of 2000

From left to right:
#1 was born premature and was abandoned by it's mother...it was several days before it could stand up.
#2 was run over by a 4 wheeler...had miscellaneous bumps and bruises...nothing broken!
#3 was separated from his mother by dogs
#4 was orphaned...mother was killed on the highway

All 4 successfully rehabilitated and released!

September 2000

She was found on North Main Street in Hornell with both left feet caught in a small engine air filter retainer. Her injuries were several days old when she was found and she died from a massive infection 2 days later. If you see litter in the woods, please remove it!

Thanks to the NY State Police and all the good folks who helped rescue this fawn!

July 2000

The hen turkey was killed while setting on her nest of eggs near the roadside.
The eggs had started to hatch and were brought to local farmer Diane Shur.
She put them in a hatcher/brooder until we could get them.
All 8 turkeys have been successfully raised and released.

Six more in 2001!

Thanks Diane!

June 2000

Fledgeling Kestrels not yet ready to be on their own were found and brought to the sanctuary. Here you see them in a new flight cage awaiting release. This is 1 of our 3 new multi-purpose cages. The design is well suited for most birds and small to medium sized mammals. The cost per cage is $100 but well worth!

Thanks Elizabeth George!

We have the wire to build 8 more cages, but not the flake board or 2x4s!
Please donate so we can build the new cages that we desperately need!

September 2000

This Great Horned Owl was found by Lisa Wint and brought to us by a DEC officer
on a Sunday. He was extremely under weight and unable to fly.
Released!!!

Thanks Lisa and thank you to Lillian Ramos DVM (for blood work performed)

September 2000

This Great Blue Heron was apprehended by the Hornell PD and placed in lockup until
we could pick it up. It was unable to fly and was being chased by cats. See the write-up
in the 9/26 Evening Tribune. A blood draw was performed by Lillian Ramos DVM and
sent to DEC Pathology lab for testing.

Released !!!

Thanks to the Hornell PD and Lillian Ramos DVM!

Spring 1999

The fawn was born with no eyes, only slits, lashes and tear ducts!
His mother had kept him alive for 6 weeks until he became separated
from his mother by dogs!

"Radar" lived with us for 2 weeks and then died from unknown causes.
We suspect there were other problems with this fawn that we could not see.
We have tried to locate other animals born without eyes and have not found
any history of this unnatural birth defect! Most defects are pasted on from the
parents and a deer without eyes would probably not live to reproduce.
Our search lead us to the possibility of  hazardous chemicals
playing with the gene pool! When will we learn that our actions
have serious consequences?

Ruby, a red-tailed hawk and long term resident here, enjoying her sanctuary
which was constructed by Alfred University Art students in 1996.

Thanks to Diane Cox and her students for a great job!
