Death
Where
there is life, there is also death.
Babies are born in hospitals. The sick and injured people go there as well, to get the very best care, but death is still there! Even with the best equipment and well educated Doctors, nurses working around the clock, death is still there! Bodies are then buried or cremated, some may even go on to help the living by becoming spare parts. The bodies are treated with respect in most casesDeath on the Farm
Where there is life, there is also death.
Any farm that has animals, shares the joys and pains of caring for them! Babies are born on farms. The animals are given the best of care. But still things happen, babies can be breach, stillborn, born into the cold, get stepped on by mom and even sometimes eaten by mom. Not to gross you out, but these are the facts! Young and adult animals can slip and fall, be attacked by domestic and/or wild animals and face death. Then there is a whole list of diseases, many leading to death! Some animals must be put down because of injury or disease. This is normal for any animal facility. Living things are not meant to live forever. They have an expiration date and some times they just fall off the shelf and break, before their time! The animals bodies can find themselves in many different disposal methods. Farms usually bury, compost or feed the wildlife, giving their death a useful purpose. The dead should never be fed back to the same species as this can carry serious problems, including disease, resistance to antibiotics, skin problems, allergies, etc. and it is also dam gross! And meat should never be fed to animals that are supposed to live on vegetation! The spread of "mad cow disease" was from this very practice!
As an educational farm and home to many unwanted animals, death finds a home here too. We accept all animals (accept cats and dogs) in all conditions, young and old, healthy or sick, thin or lame, they will have either a fighting chance for a new start on life or a quick death if there is no hope for a semi- normal life!Death on Our Farm
Where there is life, there is also death.(Unfortunately it has come to my attention over the past 30+ years of owning animals, that people seeing an animal in less then a perfect condition feel the need to call the SPCA. As a farm with an open barn door for those in need, most animals fall in to the category of less then perfect when they arrive. Most get better with good food, deworming and time, but some have permanent health problems that limits their recuperation. I have a bad back and I am lame, but I still enjoy life and so do the animals, even if they are not perfect! Check any vet hospital and I bet you will find less then perfect animals there too, some even dead! "Death Happens"
even to the best of us. It is how Mother Nature recycles!)We do not turn people in no matter what the condition of the animals placed here are, as that would stop others from placing animals here, leaving them in worse situations! Some animals are placed here by rescuers, some by owners, many are just found at the end of the driveway (please don't do this, bring them to the door). But they all find shelter and food here. Medical care is given when needed and some are put down. Keeping animals alive that are suffering with no chance of returning to a semi-normal, healthy life, is cruel. The animals do not fear death, it is natural process in the circle of life. A life of entrapment and pain is not any animals desire, not even mine!
Here at Oak-Tree, when death calls, it is handled with the best interest of the living. If an animal does not carry a disease, the body will be left in the woods for the wild ones to eat. This feeds the wildlife and keeps predators away from the barns. If disease or poisons are present, the body is buried in a brush pile to be burned at a later date, once the body has dried some. Occasionally, composting is a way to take care of smaller animals and feeds Mother Earth. We do not send our dead to a rendering factory to be turned into pet food as others do!
(As this was a dairy farm with occasional deaths before we bought it and I have done wildlife rehab. for 15+ years here with some losses, I run a small farm made up of less then perfect animals placed here and I run a small dog kennel breeding Cockers and Danes, to which I feed meat and bones to in the colder months, believe it or not there are bones in my woods! Bones do not signal neglect or abuse. The only thing bones tell you is that the dogs, coyotes, raccoons, opossum, bear, birds and other wildlife have eaten well here over the last 180 years and the dead were treated with respect, not sent off to become dog food!)
Pets should never be made into pet food! My religious beliefs will not allow me to do harm to any animal, unless it is in an act of compassion! This includes the end of long term suffering, to provide food for those in need and when those in my care are threatened, I will defend them with my life! For it is within Gaia's worship that I do these things. It is my spiritual beliefs that keep me continuing on, even against adversity, even beyond my death! It is within my religion to respect and care for Gaia and Her children, always remembering "Harm none, do as you will" and the rule of three; what you do, good or bad, will be returned onto you, with a strength 3 times greater then your deed. This rule tends to keep you on the right road, or a rude awakening might come your way! It is just "Karma" played out in this life time! The 70 acre Nature Sanctuary is my Church. My friends are always welcome, enemies should stay clear, or feel the weight of Gaia's wrath!
